In March of 1877, 84 Mormon settlers arrived on a chunk of real estate known
as the Mesa plateau.
At that time the land that made up the Valley of the Sun was desert with only
thin strips of vegetation along the Salt River. In an effort to make the desert
green, the families began rebuilding the old Hohokam irrigation canals. Because
the land reminded them of a tabletop, they named it Mesa, which means tabletop
in Spanish. Mesa is the third-largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson.
Mesa today is growing like a weed. Far enough from Phoenix to retain its small
town feel yet near enough to the big city to encourage the growth of
technological and manufacturing industries, Mesa has become more than a
retirement community and has evolved into a tourist mecca in its own right.
Layers of native, frontier, and Mexican history have combined to form a city of
eclectic tastes and offerings, from the prehistoric farming canals deep in the
ground to the current plans for development of Mesa's real estate.
Mesa is one of the United States' fastest-growing cities and has available
real estate to continue to do so far into the future.
In 2005 the mid-decade Census survey estimated the city's population to be
442,780. It actually has a larger population than better-known central cities of
large United States metropolitan areas such as St. Louis, Miami, and Pittsburgh.
It is the second most populous suburban city in the United States and third in
North America.
Desert, mountains, water—somehow Mesa real estate got it all...
Located along a spit of the Sonoran Desert, Mesa is warm and arid every month
of the year and enjoys the flora and fauna of the desert climate. Saguaro and
prickly pear cacti are abundant, along with varieties of cholla, and the dry
soil outside the city is wandered by rattlesnakes, jack rabbits, bobcats, hawks,
and owls. While Mesa homes get 320 days of sunshine annually and temperatures in the
100s during the summer, the city also has easy access to six local lakes and two
nearby rivers. The Superstition Mountain range just to the east of the city
provides some altitude to the mesas and valleys of the area.
Mesa is decidedly a bedroom community with a variety of
homes and residential real estate.
The older part of the city, near city government office buildings, has numerous
transitional housing developments and low-income housing, while east Mesa, in
particular the Las Sendas area, contains some of the most expensive custom homes
in the city. The Las Sendas community has some of the highest valued real estate
in Mesa. Mesa real estate contains approximately 85,000 housing units with
an average price in 2005 of a little over $150,000.
The Mesa Public School District educates more than 69,000 students each year.
An excellent school system contributes to a strong work ethic and the resulting
high levels of productivity and customer service help make Mesa an attractive
place for business and industry.
Eight of Fortune Magazine’s top 500 manufactures are located in Mesa,
including a diverse group of electronics, food processing, automotive testing
and safety, propulsion equipment, aerospace and heavy machinery firms. Some of
the largest include McDonnell Douglas Helicopter, TRW Vehicle Safety Systems and
AT&T. More than 100 small manufacturing firms also call Mesa home.
The city is considered the retail and medical center for Eastern Maricopa County
with its two regional malls, many large shopping centers and a central city
area. Williams Gateway Airport (formerly Williams Air Force Base) is a
designated reuse location for aerospace, education and industrial development.
In addition to two regional-sized shopping malls – Fiesta Mall and the newer
Superstition Springs Center – dozens of additional shopping areas dot Mesa’s
neighborhoods. Studies indicate that Mesa retailing draws in excess of 700,000
people.
More than twenty golf courses and forty-seven city parks are within Mesa's
expansive 123-square mile city limits. Just an hour's drive east of the city are
four popular lakes for fishing, camping, boating and other types of recreation.
For sports fans, Mesa is the winter home of the Chicago Cubs. It is also the
site of winter instructional leagues for the Cubs, San Diego Padres and
California Angels. Other major teams have spring training camps in the immediate
area.
