History of Ahwatukee
Before and during the 1800s, Indians hunted and farmed the real estate now
known as Ahwatukee. It was at the time when 32 gold and silver mines were
registered in this rich area. The area's first home was built for a dentist, Dr.
Ames, in 1921. It was later purchased by Helen Brinton in 1935 and she named it,
Ahwatukee (Ah-wa-too-kee), a Crow Indian word meaning 'House of Dreams'.
Ahwatukee is nationally recognized as one of the best places to live in
the United States.
According to Indian legend, if you hang a 'dream catcher' over your window at
night, as you bring the morning light in, good dreams will be caught in the web
and remain while bad dreams trickle down the dangling feathers and drift away.
The Ahwatukee Foothills area must have a giant dream catcher hanging over this
community!
Beginning as an individually owned property, the dream home of the Ames
family, part of Ahwatukee real estate was purchased and developed in 1971 as a residential
community. Since then, other land parcels have been added to the original
Ahwatukee community, further adding to its diversity.
It has continued to grow and properties within its boundaries have the best
median home prices in the area with the exception of Scottsdale. Master-planned
golf communities, retirement communities with all of the amenities, luxury
homes, modest starter homes, condominiums, and town houses have all sprung up in
the area. Although the housing boom is slowing down, the appeal of Ahwatukee
remains strong.
Ahwatukee is actually part of Phoenix AZ, but because of Ahwatukee's distinct
and strong identity, it is sometimes perceived as a separate town.
However, Ahwatukee is one of the twenty-three individual communities within the
Phoenix area. Ahwatukee is east of South Mountain, accessible by
Interstate 10, bordered by Tempe to the east and Chandler to the southeast.
Ahwatukee
real estate and homes are surrounded by mountains and therefore, offer mountain views
from almost any angle. Those views and the Arizona sunshine create a fabulous
backdrop for recreational activities. The communities in Ahwatukee offer
peaceful neighborhoods in the midst of beautiful desert scenery. South Mountain
Park, the largest city owned park in the nation, offers miles of recreational
opportunities from hiking trails to horseback riding. Master planned communities
are abundant, supplying amenities, which include parks, golf courses, community
centers, and landscaped walking paths.
Ahwatukee living is unique. Everything is at your fingertips, no need to drive
great distances getting to that favorite restaurant or shop. In fact, Ahwatukee
homes are often webbed in and around the upscale retail centers found throughout
the foothills. But don’t think for a moment that such proximity is at the
expense of privacy. Planned communities such as Club West and Mountain Park
Ranch enjoy the best that an Ahwatukee home has to offer while continuing to
provide beauty and privacy.
This cozy area has all the warmth and charm of a small town blessed by the
amenities of a big city just over the hill. There is a mix of folks in both
people and housing, as well as many places for visitors and neighbors to come
together and enjoy the Arizona outdoors.
Because our economy is vibrant, the sunshine and great weather aren't the
only reasons people are attracted to this area. Ahwatukee is one of the fastest
growing communities in the valley. Today, the population exceeds 70,000 and
development plans anticipate an eventual population of around 120,000. In fact,
the area has been growing so rapidly that in recent years a new school has
opened each year to accommodate our new neighbors. The residents of Ahwatukee
have the highest income per household in the valley.
Touting one of the lowest costs of living, metropolitan Phoenix offers diverse
business opportunities. Small businesses, especially those owned by women,
experience a high level of success here. The availability of high-tech careers
in aerodynamics and electronics help to make the greater Phoenix area a major
player in manufacturing.
The warm, dry climate, that allows outdoor activities throughout most of the
year, is responsible for a great deal of the appeal of Ahwatukee. Fishing at one
of the area’s seven lakes, boating, horseback riding, picnicking, and tubing
down Salt River offer exciting opportunities to enjoy the scenic beauty that
Arizona has to offer.
Golf reins as one of the undisputed kings of recreational activity in the area
with almost two hundred courses available. South Mountain Park, the largest city
park, is just as popular with its multitude of trails, including its almost
fifteen mile National Trail that requires one to park a vehicle at each end of
the park. At over 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park/Preserve often is referred
to as the largest municipal park in the country. It boasts 51 miles of primary
trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels
skills
The Phoenix area, drawing in people from all cultural backgrounds, has reached a
population of about 90,000 people. Botanical gardens, parks, zoos, museums,
theaters, and art galleries in nearby Phoenix provide stimulation for the mind
as well as the soul. For the athlete, the area is home to football, soccer, and
hockey teams. Several annual events in the greater Phoenix area, including PGA’s
Phoenix Open, the Parada del Sol in Scottsdale, and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in
Tempe, draw sports enthusiast each year.
The Kyrene school district provides an excellent educational experience for
elementary school children. The Tempe Union High School District offers two
different High School locations, Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista, for their
older students. The Thunderbird American Graduate School of International
Management, in nearby Glendale, has the reputation of the number one school in
the nation for international management.
Unique sunsets plastered above natural desert scenery, comfortably warm air
pungent with the aromatic scent of wildflowers, a relaxing lifestyle, great
investment opportunities, friendly neighborhoods, and diverse cultural and
